Gathering my plans for my box idea, I decided that I would start by creating a mind map to visually see my ideas and what kind of box I was going to go ahead with. This mind-map, it concluded with ideas being expanded to multiple ideas as to why and how this box would be useful to my audience.
Resulting the design idea of my box being a memory box was to cherish and value all moments in our lives, even the bad ones. Whether it is a gift from someone you’re close to or someone you hate, looking back in time to all the moments you lived through and all you had achieved can only make a day brighter. Anything can be put in this box, there are no rules but the ones you make up for yourself.
Process:
It took me some time to understand how to design the box provided on Adobe Substances, using the grid below, I wrote/drew the design structure of the box on a piece of paper to better understand the structure and base of my chosen object.
This grid was colour coded in order to clearly see substances where each side was located, naming the sides provided me with extra support and made it a lot easier to plan out my design.
Shown above is the figure of my box unfinished. the box demonstrates currently where the colour codings get placed and how I visually saw the object in order to help design further. The template of the box was done by exporting the UV of the box to Adobe Photoshop, which later than was adapted further through Adobe Illustrator and back to Adobe Photoshop. Settings on the side helped get my box to the material and layout standards that were required for my box design.
Created Elements:
This element was placed on the long side of my box. The key and padlock were designed to represent the privacy of this memory box, indicating in a humorous way to be kept safe and away to be looked back at in the future.
I had designed a barcode my box was a product for my audience to buy, which was located on the bottom side of my box. Most barcodes are located in hidden areas since they are not supposed to be visible to the product if it’s not on a plastic bag as it makes the product look less appropriate and neat.
My logo targetted around a clock to be the main object on my box since it was created to be a memory box, as memories are kept in the past but not forgotten in our minds, the clock represents both the future, present and past of all memories to come, and the ones that have gone.
I created this element to add more enthusiasm to a slogan I added on one of the sides of my box. The slogan quoted “Bucket List, Check!” as the green tick symbol represents something being completed and finished.
As the clock was the main picture of the logo, I had also taken it and placed it on the inner side of the lid. Intended to add more designs for a more aesthetic theme around the entire box, rather than leaving the area empty.
This element was designed to signify trails in life, the plane representing another symbol of the clock, but in a different form. It joins in with the green tick
Finally, the last two top elements link together but are placed on either side of the box. They show a representation of what could possibly be put in the box, being photographs. As the theme of my box was leaning more towards an aesthetic feeling, the Polaroid camera, with the Polaroid photo slips was only the best choice.
Box Plan:
Since I already had the UV box on Photoshop already downloaded, I began designing each side of the box one by one and applying it to my box on Adobe Susbatances to see if all design sides work individually. Once each side was completed, I moved on to the lid and repeated the same steps again. Each design side was created for a separate message, but all linked to the same purpose in terms of the boxes’ meaning, being a souvenir capture.
Applying the design to the box finally brought everything together, some elements that I had created were a little big in terms of angles and the positioning of the box, but all together fitted the aesthetic I was aiming for. All elements come together to fit the “souvenir’s” logo title, keeping up the memories and idea of treasuring small items in a simple box.
